Sometimes cable TV is good and you stumble upon a great documentary. Annie Leibovitz is by far one of the biggest photographers to capture iconic images over the last 30 years. Released in 2006, this documentary really captures photography through different aspects of editorial, entertainment and personal life. It also simply portrays how the camera gives purpose. An Ode to DJ Mehdi

Sometimes your ears fall in love. The first time I heard French producer DJ Mehdi live was at MoMa's PS1 back in September 2010. As I dig the 2011 crates this week on the blog I wanted to pay homage
to the great DJ Mehdi who the music scene lost back in September of this year. I put together some footage of Mehdi alongside fellow producer Riton at a small venue called the Liquid Room in Edinburgh, Scotland. Together under the French electro collective Ed Banger Records, they were Carte Blanche. Being the music geek that I am, the last time I heard Mehdi on top of the Standard at Le Bain I told him I followed him to Edinburgh, and I quote, said "you are the shit." Mehdi's energy and skills behind the tables moved the dance floor like no other. As many of his close friends in the scene have often tweeted and titled their tribute mixes, I say "Mehdi Forever". Repost en paix.

Yeah, should've posted these back in September but since I'm recapping 2011 this week on the blog, I figured better late than nevs. MTA and HBO teamed up to promote the premiere of 'Boardwalk Empire' by running a retro 1920s train on the 2 and 3 tracks from 96th to 42nd street during the weekends of September. The promotional vintage train was filled with Prohibition inspired artwork to commemorate the HBO series. Details included ceiling fans, drop sash passenger windows, exposed light bulbs and 1920s advertisements.

Knee deep in the holiday season and the passing of the winter solstice (60 degrees in December, what?), thought it would be appropriate to recap summers past. Here's to humid nights, blonde hair, the beach, the park, the highline, summer flings, cookouts, fireworks, planking, road trips, obnoxious cab rides, cutoff shorts, daytime dancing, al fresco seating, hot tub raging and rooftop smokes. It was a good one, maybe even a great one.

I shot my first wedding last summer. The bride and groom, Leila and Ben, are also good friends of mine and made it easy to capture their day. The intimate backyard ceremony, energetic reception, and colorful environs of Philly's own Magic Gardens were all interesting subjects especially on South Broad St where the couple actually met in high school.

Feast of San Gennaro - New York

Normally I steer clear of the parades, marches and festivals in New York to avoid pedestrian overload but I was talked into checking out the 85th Annual Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy this year. Originating in 1926 to honor the Patron Saint of Naples, San Gennaro has expanded from a "one day street festival to 11 day gala" that takes over Mulberry Street from Canal to Houston, to Grand and Hester Street between Mott and Baxter. Merchants and residents fought to rid the festival this year (due to unwanted traffic and blame to loss of sales), however it was overturned in March when Mayor Bloomberg granted a permit to keep the festival in tow.

Starting on September 15-25, sausage, torrone and pizza filled the streets alongside cornicellos and Jersey Shore slang t-shirts that hung from vendor stands. The current festival has somewhat left behind the authenticity of Italian culture where fried oreos were sold and Winnie the Pooh dressed as Rastas were carnival prizes throughout the overcrowded streets. I was even convinced into taking a ride on the relatively safe ferris wheel that landed in the middle of Grand Street. Who knows if I'll be attending anymore of these festivals this year, but I just think of what a New Yorker passing by had said to me, "there's nothing wrong with acting like a tourist"... at least for a day.

Little Manhattan by Yutaka Sone - New York

The current exhibition "Yutaka Sone: ISLAND" at the David Zwirner gallery is a sight to see, specifically the two-and-a-half-ton marble sculpture Little Manhattan (2007-2009). Japanese artist Sone who is originally a trained arhchitect, recreates an intricately carved model of the island of Manhattan to scale. He bases his model off of reproductions of photographs, Google Earth images and several helicopter rides over the cityscape. The 3D replica of Manhattan has accurate reproduction of all avenues, blocks, skyscrapers, bridges and even paths within Central Park. The natural coloring of the marble helps to create depth and shadowing of the city grid. One can't help but stare at the craftsmanship and precise carvings displayed in the marble. Go see it for yourself, the exhibition runs from September 20-October 29 at David Zwirner (525 West 19th Street). If I were to describe Little Manhattan in two words, that'd be easy...
simply marble-ous. (Yes, pun intended).

Big Yellow C - New York

I know I wasn't the only person in New York City walking around in bewilderment wondering about the Big Yellow C statues that were placed around the city that started on September 13. From afar it looked as if the piece of art could be part of a designers typography exhibit. It was revealed on September 20 by BigYellowC.com that the C's were to promote and educate awareness about the disease and provide information about testing to New Yorkers about Hepatitis C. The statues were found anywhere from Times Square, Bryant Park, Penn Station, Union Square, Harlem, Battery Park, DUMBO and Fulton Street. I was lucky enough to stumble upon three in one day, a new one at Bryant Park placed the following week and even later spotted a mural.

The public art/marketing piece drew me in completely before the announcement as I had anxiously searched online for what the possible meaning could be. Text was eventually placed upon the pieces and also displayed a QR reader for smart phones allowing pedestrians to interact while learning facts about the disease. More information on the disease can be found on FindHepC. I hope to see more campaigns throughout the city that will allow tourists and city dwellers to learn about issues via statement pieces such as these, presenting issues which normally are often ignored. It gives you something to think about and gives the city something to talk about. Check out the photos I snapped during my commute. Public awareness, I'm totally into you.

Yes, there's been a big hiatus, but what better way to return than during New York Fashion Week. I wanted to make another return as well - to the street - and grab a few shots of the hangers-on surrounding the shows at Lincoln Center. As the evening wore on, I noticed I was more attracted to the writers, photographers, editors, doormen, etc. instead of the expected models and Illuminati. Maybe because they were in a rush and didn't have practiced poses like some others. I enjoy the real and spontaneous way people hold themselves, well sometimes.

Before I left for Paris, someone gave me an assignment to capture something that displayed a "juxtaposition of old and new". This was shot at a small cafe around the corner from Rodin's 'The Thinker'. Looking at it now I would have probably shot it with a different eye, used a different lens and shot from a different angle. Progression? Maybe. There's so many things I could ramble on about but I'll let it speak for itself.

Street photography has been the backbone of the Post-Ups mixing together the ingredients of spontaneity and unique subjects. I was hype to find out a documentary on street photographer Jamel Shabazz is playing later this month at BAMcinemaFEST. Brooklyn's own Shabazz, has been covering urban life for over 30 years and has also focused much of his career on exposing inner city youth to the arts, connecting photography, history and the inner city community.

An exhibition to commemorate the June release of his latest book, Back In the Days: REMIX documenting the hip-hop scene of the 80s, is being displayed from June 16-June 26 at BAM. The documentary is airing June 26 with a Q&A with director Charlie Aheam, followed by a booksigning by Shabazz. Peep the trailer below and also check out a recent interview via Mosaic Magazine.

Fun facts (taken from Wikipedia): the Washington Monument made of marble, granite and bluestone gneiss is the world's tallest obelisk, standing at 555 feet. Designed by Robert Mills, was the world's tallest structure until the completion of the Eiffel Tower which stands at 1, 063 ft.

Returned to Brooklyn for the latest SPANK Blacklight Forest Party. The loft space was transformed into a blacklight haven with an installation of hanging lights and a wall to ceiling chalkboard. The psychadelic atmosphere was a sight to see with head to toe outfits glowing of white tees, neon and dayglow paint. The photobooth was held early on in the night as the loft quickly filled elbow to elbow while SPANK's deejays Sean B and Dj Will Automagic kept everyone moving. A huge apology for being on a bit of a hiatus lately. With the holidays, relocating to Harlem and catching up on post-production from gigs - it's been a bit crazy. An Ode to Onion City

If we ever had to describe the ultimate limbo situation after graduating from college, moving out of ma and pa's and trying to make it in the big city, "The Onion" as we called it, would be it. The five bedroom house served its purpose for the house parties, the photo-shoots, the couch surfing friends and about the nine people who moved in and out of it. Inspired by one of my frequents, The Selby, I decided to capture the last few weeks before we moved out. It was one of those "if walls could talk" kind of places. Nevertheless, it was perfect in every sense for a struggling artist's pocket and, after forty three months, the longest commitment I've ever made.

The annual potluck is a hometown crew tradition we kept for the past five years. Last year, we brought you An Ode to Norman Rockwell while this year's was a bit more organized and timely, not held in February. We've transformed our dinner party ways by a few details including axing the gift giving and developing a menu to prevent hodgepodge cuisine. This year's grub was based on Mediterranean fare and attire was themed to contrast our Black Christmas/Recession Potluck of 2008 with Glam. In addition to homemade hummus, pasta, tiramisu, vegan cupcakes, 15 bottles of wine, and a bottle of Scotch, we continued the already pairing-off of everyone and shot "Couples Holiday Post-Ups." As you can see, nothing's really changed over the years and the singles of the crew are, well, still single. Feliz Navidad everyone, see you next year!

The last leg of our southern blog-trot consisted of driving from Charleston back north to DC and NYC. We made a mandatory, yes mandatory, stop at the nostalgic post of many family vacations, South of the Border. The rest area lies at the border between Dillon, South Carolina and Rowland, North Carolina. With its mascot, Pedro, the landmark is known for its fireworks and an absolutely inoffensive Mexican motif.

Tweeting along the way, I noticed there aren't many places where you can purchase fireworks, bread, milk, beer in one go so glad we stopped. Before going our separate ways in DC, we met more friends along the way like "JC Muscle" from Petersburg, VA, purchased two packs of cigarettes for $10.27 and dropped about $80.00+ on fireworks. We covered 1,740 miles (2800 km) and 10 states in 7 days. Next stop: Nicarauga, Spring 2011.

Well, not Ms. Sylvia London, she swayed away in her roller blades, yes roller blades.

One of the last sunlit and mild days of the year luckily coincided with the latest Kaviar & Cigarettes shoot. Continuing our long running collaboration, we shot the flowering label's Women's RTW collection atop the roofs of Bushwick. The two met very well together as the views of a clustered Brooklyn suited the heavily embroidered, almost collaged, fabrics of Kaviar & Cigarettes. The geometry, the contrast, the texture: it all made even more sense once we started barbecuing.

- Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a mustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men's health.

As this grand month of Movember comes to a close, I decided to share some excerpts I scanned from a book I picked up after visiting the Dalí: The Late Work exhibition at the High Museum in Atlanta. I fell in love with all things Salvador Dalí after living in Barcelona in 2005 and thought no better way to end this month than with images of the Surrealist master and owner of the most superior mustache of all time. The images below feature the interview conducted and documented by photographer Philippe Halsman. The exhibition is running now until January 9 - so if you are in the ATL area, I highly recommend you get to it. It's that good.

After a two night stay in Atlanta, we trotted our way through Northeast Georgia for a breezy five and a half hour drive to our last stop of the road trip, South Carolina. Our little blue Mazda cruised the highways and side roads of the countrysides and finally landed us in the quaint city of Charleston. Spontaneity is a given when it comes to road trips as we spent a few hours on a hunt for shelter. Staying in a dainty hotel for the night, we were surrounded by a handful of charming boutiques and restaurants. It was a nice change of pace from Miami and Atlanta but I'm pretty sure the seventeen hours spent there was just enough.

Late in the game, we decided to see what this phenomenon called "Four Loko" was all about. CNN described the 23.5-ounce can as the equivalent of five beers mixed with a strong cup of coffee. The 12% alcoholic energy drink consists of caffeine, taurine, Guarana and wormwood (an active ingredient in absinthe). Just in time before the FDA pulled it off the shelves, we rounded up the squad, channeled our inner frat-boy, and rented an apartment in the Lower East Side to celebrate Carlie's entry into her twenty-seventh year. So what's the big deal with this liquid cocaine?. Let's just say, once the can is popped, the rumors are true and the news headlines are real. Literally a day later, New York banned shipment of Four Loko. Is life about timing or what? This post is in honor of the bandwagon we hopped on and a highly edited version of photos that were taken that night. And take it from The Post-Ups: Four Loko is not to be mixed with Jägermeister.

The home of The Braves and the 9th largest city in the US was the second spot on our ten southern state blog-trot. With only two nights and one full day, this Yankee enjoyed every second of southern hospitality. First time to the ATL, it offered anything a good city can offer: great food, good shops, museums, culture, music, etc. I was even able to catch Dalí: The Late Work at the High Museum which, of course, I fell in love with. If only we had more time I would've been all over the Signs of Life: Photographs by Peter Sekaer exhibition, which is the first time a city exhibited his collection. Pretty sad the museum closed so early I splurged with dropping $80.00 in the book store - typical. Spent the day dropping by Gladys Knight's restaurant for some legit chicken and waffles, cruising through shops in Little 5 Points and was able to catch up with old college friends who were new to the city. I even met a guy who told me I was his next customer - selling me a 2 in 1, lighter+knife combo for $2.00. Ha. Oh Hotlanta, you are def a city I am eager to return to.

The Post-Ups's west coast debut was in LA for my cousin Cheryl aka The Birthdayzilla's 30th birthday rager. Held in her condo in West LA equipped with a bartender and a deejay, friends and fam were present from Philly, NYC, San Diego, Colorado and up and down the coast of the Golden State. Guests seemed to follow the only rule while the dark colored dress attire wasn't the only thing that was blacked out. Let's just say, the unhappy neighbors decided to invite the LAPD to shut it down. W Hotel In-House Series: 'Away We Stay'

By way of New York Mag, I came across the premiere of a W Hotel short film series (read the full description here).- maybe it's my overdose on sugar free Red Bull that had me lured in or the desaturated hues of Leicester Square or the fact that I loosely relate to the main character.

An eleven hour drive from South Beach to Hotlanta came equipped with a cooler full of sandwiches, beef jerky, and Red Bull. The flat drive up I-95 North on a Monday afternoon was a pretty smooth one. We blog-trotted through the state of Florida into Georgia while making friends with toll booth tellers and gas station attendees. I must give props to the people on the Oregon Trail, without a GPS, a smart phone with mobile web, and an iPod, it would have been just as fun as reading a dictionary. Miami, the first stop on the seven day road trip from South Florida to NYC, was introduced with the third installment of the Hotel Series at the Sagamore Hotel. Our third time here, Emilie and I made sure to avoid the Snooki/Situation South Beach scene of fist pumping, red ropes, and bottle service and ended up in downtown Miami at Vagabond and Purdy Lounge. Add a couple Cuban sandwiches, a sprinkling of sand and sun grime, and Art Deco and you basically get the sense of my four days/three nights in MIA.

Hotel Series III: Sagamore Hotel - Miami

The latest addition to the Hotel Series via The Sagamore Hotel in South Beach. A series of two former college roommates who reunite in Miami to begin a seven day trek up north. One flies in from San Pedro Sula, Honduras after wrapping up two and a half years in the Peace Corps. The other, a freelance photographer, flies in on a one way from JFK. This begins their ten state blog-trot from Florida back to DC and NYC. Two, extended to three nights in a two floor bungalow suite - can you say, swagamore? har har.

In honor of Lindsay's 26th birthday and the 1 Year Post-Up Anniversary Launch, we brought back the year 2000. Since my recent overload in post-production, I decided to put my camera down and enjoy myself with some cake, beer, and hot tub fun until 5 in the morning. Only a few photos were taken of the Octoberfest 50 degree Pool Party where we nixed the idea of re-living the totem pole and sipped on some pumpkin ale instead.

One year ago today, I decided to get off my red rolly computer chair and, not only photograph what and who I found interesting, but display them. I created The Post-Ups quite naively at first and soon realized that I had more to show than trendy friends with one foot up against a wall. My brazen raison d'etre, the blog has morphed into a noun, verb, and culture that in many ways provides a range of photobiographies of my friends and, of utmost importance, the evolution of my different hairstyles.

Thank you to everyone in Toronto, Montreal, Paris, Honduras, The Philippines, Miami, Atlanta, Charleston, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and of course, New York City for participating, contributing, and promoting us over the year. London, Edinburgh, and Los Angeles, prepare.

Last weekend, I returned to what is fast becoming the most-kiki'd-about party in the city. Being that it was Columbus Day weekend and 10/10/10, the party had a few extras which culminated at 10:10pm when troves of balloons were dropped from the second floor balcony. Congrats to the married couple of the night, Charles and TJ, as well as Brian Rafferty and Shawn Paul Mazur for another success and getting me drunk before work.

Another party in The Meatpacking District? Yes, but this is a whole new way of looking at it, at least for this blog. It's a new season so we wanted a new medium to convey where we go, who we see, and what we hear. The penthouse bar @ The Standard Hotel always seemed a lil' off-limits to mortals, but every Sunday, it opened up for ÉTÉ D'AMOUR. Justin Miller and Wolfram! were there last week for the last one of the summer and, of course, so were we... with our new digital camera.
